1982: Missing
There are a few reasons I chose to reblog this photo. First being that I couldn’t find a photo from the film I just watched, second being that Jack Lemmon was a lot better looking in the 60s than he was in the 80s, and third being, yes, I know Paul Newman wasn’t in Missing, but look at him! I digress.
Missing was a pretty interesting story. It takes place in Chile, a location not commonly used in this list I’ve got here. It surrounded the search for Charlie, the husband of Sissy Spacek, and the son of Jack Lemmon. There’s plenty of distrust with the US Ambassadors and the Chilean government. Lemmon resents Spacek, because he believes their liberal lifestyle has put his son in danger. There’s a great clash of generations and morals, as Spacek is a young leftist, while Lemmon is a conservative Christian Scientist.
This unbalance was probably common for the time. The parent child relationship was stuck in an odd place: The parents of the 50s and children of the 70s had to deal with the conflicting middle generation of the 60s revolutionaries. This frustration was discussed in Ordinary People. Teens weren’t exactly a part of this counter culture that only ten years beforehand had been significant. They struggled with where to find their place among the issues of politics, religion, and general responsibility.
This was a great movie. I still think Sissy Spacek is the biggest dud ever. Maybe she’ll randomly become interesting sometime soon, who knows?
